Preserving Memory: Project MemoryWalk_360 in Vöcklabruck and Vicinity
17.03.2025

Dealing with the history of the Nazi era in our region is of central importance to Mauthausen Committee Vöcklabruck. With three former satellite camps and the memorial site in Attnang-Puchheim, there are numerous historical traces that need to be preserved and disseminated. In cooperation with schools and companies providing vocational training, projects are repeatedly launched to actively shape remembrance and enable young people to reflect critically.
A particularly innovative step in this remembrance work is the project "MemoryWalk_360: Vöcklabruck, Attnang-Puchheim, Lenzing and Zipf", which was implemented in 2024 together with the Anne Frank House, schools and Stiwa GmbH. The aim was to enable an informative and interactive online exploration of the region's Nazi history.
A virtual tour through a culture of remembrance
"MemoryWalk_360" is an interactive virtual tour that was developed by pupils from the secondary school Bundesgymnasium Vöcklabruck and apprentices from Stiwa GmbH. With the help of 360-degree photographs, monuments and memorials in the region were digitally recorded and placed in a historical context with the intention of remembering the victims of National Socialism and enabling people to experience the significance of these places for today's society.
The project offers a comprehensive educational resource that enables website visitors to engage intensively with the local culture of remembrance. The digital implementation allows the history to be communicated in a sustainable way and makes the monuments accessible to a wide audience.
Education, participation and modern technology are combined
In July 2024, the project was implemented as part of a three-day workshop. The focus was on peer education, youth participation, and cooperation with local experts. The participants dealt intensively with the historical background of the monuments and used modern technical means to keep the culture of remembrance alive.
This innovative approach has created a unique educational tool that enriches both school lessons and the interested public. The combination of historical knowledge and digital processing makes "MemoryWalk_360" an important contribution to local remembrance work.
We hope that this project provides a lasting impetus for dealing with the history of National Socialism in our district and thank everyone involved for their commitment.
